What is PhotoVoice?

Work Through my Lens is a photovoice project. Photovoice is grounded in theories of empowerment and change.  We are not affilliated with photovoice.org, but check out some of their great projects for some examples: http://www.photovoice.org/

Please get in contact with us if you need more background info than what you can find here.

History:

Caroline Wang and Mary Ann Burris developed Photovoice in 1992 out of these theories:
--Paulo Freier’s critical consciousness: a deep understanding of the way the world works and how society, politics and power relationships affect one’s own situation)
-- Feminist theory: emphasizes the importance of using your voice
--Photography: a medium that allows people to document things and bring about social change

The three main goals of Photovoice:
Enable people to record and reflect their experiences and their communities’ conditions
Encourage critical consciousness- choosing, discussing and reflecting on pictures (SHOWeD)
To reach policy makers, general public with goal of bringing about change

Five key concepts:
Images teach
Pictures can influence policy
Community members ought to participate in creating and defining the images that shape public policy and public opinion—YOU ARE THE EXPERT!!

Individual and community action is emphasized
