exhibit guidelines
Thanks for your interest in submitting
to Work Through My Lens, an exhibit about work and our lives,
highlighting the service industry. Here is what we are looking for:
- You currently work in the service industry.
- Take photos ( as many as you would like) which represent the beauty and challenges you face in relation to your work. DO NOT TAKE PHOTOS IN THE WORKPLACE, or photos which show logos or other identifying features of your place of employment. See the FAQ about risks. We seek print-quality photos. The resolution of your smartphone is acceptable. Contact us if you are unsure if your camera will make print-quality photos.
- Write a narrative about these photos.
- Email to : debbyflorence@gmail.com. Make the subject line say: Work Through My Lens
- We will be in communication with you about your photos. We may want you to develop your ideas further, or we might suggest further proofreading or edits.
Background of this project:
Work through My Lens is part
photo-essay, part exhibit, and part social justice. It is a project
of Good Jobs Missoula, which has been interviewing food service
workers since 2013. We are a group of people who are concerned about
the struggles working people face. Many of the organizers of this
project work in service industry jobs ourselves.
At first, Work Through My Lens was
going to be only about the food service industry. However, in Sept
2014, we decided to expand this project to kitchen-service-retail,
and open up a general art call. The stereotypes around all service
industry jobs are similar. We want to show the world who is really
working at these jobs and why. Plus, we know the statistics: theservice industry is one of the most viable sources of income in ourcountry today. We know there are no alternatives in many places.
